Another Side of a Favorite Jedi Master

Thanks to last night's TCW episode, we now know that Obi-Wan has a past that he's never spoken of, one that perhaps gave him a different view of Anakin and Padme.

Yes, Obi-Wan had a girlfriend. A lover. The Duchess Satine. A beautiful woman of power, someone he both protected and loved when he was much younger.

The entire episode is amazingly entertaining, with both fun and action. A re-do of the elevator scene from AOTC, only this time it's Anakin sensing Obi-Wan's tension was so funny.

And Anakin's question to him, "were you and Satine ever..." was easily answered, "yes" without the word being spoken.

But the true heartening moments come near the end, when Satine thinks they're about to die and tells Obi-Wan that she's always loved him, and he says that if she'd only said the words back then he would have left the Jedi for her.

Amazing... although I can't imagine Obi-Wan as anything but a Jedi Knight, it is finally shown that perhaps he does understand Anakin all too well.

Satine. A lovely lady with a lovely name. Did Obi-Wan think of her every time he saw a beautiful woman?

And some wonder why he was so blind about Anakin and Padme... perhaps that blindness was fueled by own memories? Memories of a love and a passion that he passed by in order to be a Jedi.

"You've made a commitment to the Jedi Order," he tells Anakin in AOTC. And now we know he's speaking from experience. The experience of loving someone he should not have.

I think it's more likely he was not blind to Anakin and Padme, but rather compassionate. Having had his own love end in heartbreak, we assume, could he simply not bear to put his Padawan through the same pain?

Or did he assume that Anakin, too, would do the right thing and walk away from his love, and uphold his commitment to the Jedi Order rather than do the wrong thing and then live a lie.

Poor Obi-Wan! Even when he does right, he doesn't come out ahead. But he does come out with his honor.

Yeah, it convinced him even more that they were irresponsible and foolish, and ultimately threw away both of their lives through their lack of patience and foresight. Like he didn't know that before.

Yes, Obi-Wan had a girlfriend. A lover. The Duchess Satine. A beautiful woman of power, someone he both protected and loved when he was much younger.

Which is awesome and beautiful, but I really, really, really can't help but wonder...Siri.

I love the fact that we got some Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan backstory last night, but I wish they would've placed Satine after Siri's death.

Obi-Wan mentions that if Satine would've asked him to leave the Order so that they could be together, he would've done it. But in Jude Watson's novels, he says that if Siri wanted him to leave the Order so that they could be together, he would've done it. So what if both of them asked him at the same time? :^O

The entire episode is amazingly entertaining, with both fun and action.

Easily my favorite episode so far. The only problem is that no other episode will be able to compare!!! :D

Having had his own love end in heartbreak, we assume, could he simply not bear to put his Padawan through the same pain?

I'm favoring the theory that the pain from his own experiences blinded him to Anakin's pain. Rather than empowering him, it robbed him of the power of experience. Like I said in your last blog, a Jedi's life is no piece of cake. It seems like you can't win for losing.

Poor Obi-Wan! Even when he does right, he doesn't come out ahead. But he does come out with his honor.

And an honorable Jedi Knight he is! The true epitome of what it means to be a Jedi, and what a Jedi can do with his life.

I've got a lot more to say about this, but I think I've exhausted all of my cognizant thoughts on the matter. Let me think...Yeah, I have. :p

Obi-Wan was only 18 when he was hot for Siri, too young! So maybe he met Satine later.

Noooo! You can't run out of cognizant thoughts!

I don't know...Isn't Renora hot for me? She's not even 17. ;)

But he was considerably older when Siri died, because she and he both had Padawans by then. I suppose they'd decided that it wasn't going to work between them, because I think I remember Legacy of the Jedi mentioning how Siri was making an effort to remain aloof towards Obi-Wan, to keep herself from being dominated by her judgement. So I guess Satine could've been sometime between Obi-Wan first meeting Siri and he and Siri deciding they were going to part ways.

There. I can sleep easy now. :p

Noooo! You can't run out of cognizant thoughts!

You want to make a bet? :^O I've had a very non-cognizant day. It's even making me consider leaving aforementioned non-cognizant website. ;)

Aha, here's a cognizant thought. I like seeing a more human side of the Jedi (okay, maybe not always "human"...sentient?) because it underscores the struggle that they endure their entire lives. They've got the coolest job in the galaxy, but also the most difficult.

I also like TCW episodes that balance butt-kicking and clever dialogue. Too much of either of those, and I get bored. Too little of neither of those, and the episode feels like it's lacking.

Unfortunately, it looks like episode after next is a token Padme episode. Padme's character has been in steady decline since the film (where she was awesome), and now I dread episodes that center on her. I wish they'd mix her into an episode with more primary characters, instead of making her stand on her own. Which she can't. Phooey.

Anyway, I never thought I'd say this, but I'm really disappointed that the Mando arc is almost over!! I've loved it!!! :D

It was interesting to see that side of Obi-Wan. Which makes me wonder why he did not sit down with Anakin and Padme and have a heart to heart. Their relationship was doomed from the start. They were both to stubborn to walk away.

nice blog btw

I thought it was a gripping episode, gl, and dare I say that in showing right out in the open, or as open as Obi-wan was able to allow, that the great Jedi Master did have a past that involved someone near and dear to his heart. He so obviously still carried a torch for the lovely Satine.

You know, it always struck me as a tell-tale sign that Padmé had more faith in Obi-wan than Anakin did. She asks Anakin in Ep. III if Obi-wan would be able to help the ill-fated lovers, and Anakin responds with an emphatic "No!" Should Padmé have pushed the matter more? Who's to say? Even though Obi-wan may have encouraged Anakin to stay true to his commitment to the Jedi, Anakin could leave if he wanted to.

Back to Friday's episode: I loved the little smile Anakin exhibited out of Obi-wan's line of vision. :) The tie-in to AOTC was great, and further strengthens the tie between the two Jedi. The were more than comrades-in-arms. They were, as Obi-wan so sadly stated as his heart was being torn from his breast (figuratively speaking, of course) in ROTS, brothers.

This was one of my favorite episodes. I'm looking forward to next week's. :)

Excellent blog! :)

Even if he'd met and fallen in love with Satine in between the time he was with Siri and Siri's death, he would still have feelings for Siri and mourn her death.

I know, I'm as shocked as you are!

In "Wild Space" he has a heart-to-heart with Padme and she agrees to leave Anakin alone... the lying little ##### goes on to marry him...

Should Padmé have pushed the matter more?

Probably, but she knew Obi-Wan would tell Anakin he would have to choose between her and the Jedi Order. In the novel of ROTS Padme thinks that Anakin needs to be a Jedi, and she can't bear to force him to choose.

Right, that makes sense. But I was thinking of the possibility of him falling for both of them at the same time, and both of them asking him to leave the Order. Poor Obi-Wan. It's not easy being a dashing, handsome Jedi! :^O

Didn't the lying little ##### ( :p ) marry him before they have the talk? And with the way she and Anakin were going on with the chee chee barries at the begining of the book, I don't think they'd be likely to leave each other for a while. ;)

No, you didn't. :^O

I thought they had the talk while Anakin was still in the Halls of Healing after Geonosis... getting his new hand and all... I could be wrong, of course... either way, she lied to Obi-Wan.

Poor Obi-Wan. It's not easy being a dashing, handsome Jedi! :^O

But he manages it so well! :x

I think there were several times he attempted to talk to her. Maybe three or four times. Once was while Anakin was getting his new hand, another time was about a year after that. And of course, he talked to her during the time around ROTS, because Anakin sensed his presence when he went to see his wife.

Nice blog Gidrea. I also loved the episode and LOVED the AOTC elevator callback. I live for that stuff on this series.

In a perfect world I'd have enjoyed seeing a longer version of this story with Anakin going beyond teasing his master about his relationship with Satine and trying to get some advice on the whole Jedi relationship conundrum, without ever mentioning specifics of course. "Obi-Wan, I have this, uh, Jedi cousin who has a secret marriage. What should I... HE do about that?" I'm sure Anakin thinks he's got it all figured out anyway, but it could've been a very interesting and rare teaching moment where Anakin might actually pay attention between Master and Padawan.

Oh, the thought of that conversation is so funny... know-it-all Anakin listening to Obi-Wan!

"This Jedi Cousin..." :^O

Best damn episode so far of Season 2. I'm so glad LFL is developing this story arc. Let's hope they let it fizzle like others. BTW, those tie-ins like the elevator scene of AOTC are done intentional. ;)

Of course they are, and that one was well done.

I think at the end, where the guy was holding the detonator, Obi-Wan should have just cut his arm off... after all, it's not like he hasn't done THAT before. LOL

Seems like Obi Wan had many sincere doubts in the Jedi Order (even though he is one of the greatest jedi around), if there are two women who have tempted him to leave! Yoda would have been wise to not ignore feelings of love. Many good Jedi may have been lost!

Loved the part in the episode where Anakin said he'd go one direction and obi Wan should go rescue his girlfriend! Too funny.
