I'm Luke Skywalker and I'm Here to Rescue You!

Words that sparked the imagination!

You must do what you feel is right, of course.

Obi-Wan gives Luke the chance to do the right thing, for the right reasons. He won't beg or badger him into going along, although he must have been desperate at that point, needing Luke to go with him, hoping against hope that he'll go with him.

Obi-Wan had a lot he isn't saying here, like "You're the last of the Jedi and if you stay here on this dirtball you'll never realize your destiny!"

He knows he's getting old, and perhaps he's seen the end of his life drawing near and knows he hasn't much time left to teach Luke the things he needs to know. The things the galaxy needs him to know.

I suppose if Luke had chosen to stay on Tatooine, it would have meant he wasn't worthy of becoming a Jedi! But he's our hero, and does the right thing.

I'm Luke Skywalker and I'm here to rescue you!

Luke never thinks twice about rescuing the Princess. Just because she's beautiful? I don't think so. It's another case of doing the right thing. He sees her as helpless (HA!) and he's in a position to help her, so he does, without thought of the danger.

I am a Jedi, like my father before me.

Well, there's a lot of imagination at work there. Luke wanted his father to have been a great Jedi, not knowing the details of his betrayal and his murderous rampage through the Temple. Luke was young and idealistic, and he had a good heart.

Did he really do the right thing? Sure, it all came out all right in the end, but was Vader worth risking his life for? I don't think so.

Maybe that's why Luke's a hero and I'm a big, fat chicken-butt!

My personal favorite imagination-sparking quote of the entire saga has to be:

For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic.

For me, that started a lifelong love affair with the Jedi and Star Wars!

Now, go imagine something!

Obi-Wan gives Luke the chance to do the right thing, for the right reasons.

Obi-Wan trusted in the Force, and knew that Luke would embrace his destiny. And I think when he looked at Luke he saw a bit of what Anakin could've been, and he was determined to ensure that, this time, he did it right.

But he's our hero, and does the right thing.

He's a hero to the whole galaxy! :x

He sees her as helpless (HA!)

Was he in for the surprise of his life...

and he's in a position to help her, so he does, without thought of the danger.

Luke is so selfless, so true to what he believes in. That's partially what makes him the greatest hero and legend of Star Wars.

I am a Jedi, like my father before me.

That line never fails to choke me up. It is at that point that Luke has made his decision, that he is sure of himself and has embraced the Force, and where he becomes a real Jedi, not like his father before him, but better. ;)

Maybe that's why Luke's a hero and I'm a big, fat chicken-butt!

A hero is in the eye of the beholder, Giddy. I'm sure you're a hero to somebody. :p

For me, that started a lifelong love affair with the Jedi and Star Wars!

Nothing sparks my imagination more than the Jedi Knights, guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy.

Now, go imagine something!

The problem is getting myself to stop!! :^O

Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.

I think you know me well enough by now to realize that anytime Luke :x is mentioned in one's blog - let alone play a major role :) in its theme - I will read it. ; Does that mean I'm not discerning? Ha! Far from it. I always enjoy meandering over to read what you have to share, gl, and this is no exception. :)

Every time I watch ANH, and listen to Ben's simple words to Luke, :x and more importantly, how Ben imparts his encouragement to the soon-to-be Jedi, I can't help but think of the parental role, how one wants one's child(ren) to do the right thing, to make the best choices, but not force, cajole, twist that child's arm into making the right choice (or at least what the parent perceives as the right choice).

Said child really must make her/his own decision.

(This is a stage at which I find myself so often these days, and I so wish I had Obi-wan's patience! It truly is a fine line I walk between wanting to reason as to why I think one decision is best - for reason helps one make a decision - and understanding that my children's choices and my choices necessarily aren't going to be the same. :O Afterall, we are different creatures.)

And I wonder just what Ben would have done if Luke hadn't made the ultimate decision he made.

I mean. . .Luke :x decided to accompany Obi-wan after he found his aunt and uncle charred beyond recognition. He truly had nothing left for him on Tatooine.

It's interesting how events - beyond our control - can spur us down a path we never really would have chosen.

Once Luke :x got Ben to Mos Eisley, maybe then Obi-wan would have used a little persuasion on our hero. I don't mean swaying Luke's mind via Force methods. I mean using a bit of parental persuasion. ; Such an idea wasn't foreign to the great Jedi Master. He used such tactics often enough with Anakin. A look. A few well-crafted words strung together. They had an effect on the Chosen One, don't forget.

It's fun to muse about what might have happened given a different set of circumstances. ; And it's always fun to read musings that feature Luke. :x :D I like to imagine that Luke :x would have agreed to accompany Obi-wan on that damned-fool, idealistic crusade. Because it was the right thing to do. That is one of Luke's :x strongest attributes - striving to do the right thing, no matter what.

The important thing, though, is to have a plan. Even if it's half-baked. (Well, he had only a plan how to get into the detention block, not getting out. ;) At least there was a princess who had more sense. :))

I'm Luke Skywalker, I'm here to rescue you! Is one of the best lines of the entire saga. It sure sparked my five year old imagination when I saw it on the big screen back in '77. I liked it so much I bought a sweat shirt with that exact phrase on it (you've got to love ebay). It is those words that I go to when I am lacking confidence in accomplishing a task. Luke was so sure of himself. He and his pitiful little band against the entire Death Star garrison and he thinks they're going to get out alive? That's pretty ballsy.

I think Luke would have come around. Obi-Wan would have convinced him in that quiet, firm manner that he had. And Luke would have done the right thing. He usually did!

understanding that my children's choices and my choices necessarily aren't going to be the same.

Ummm, MTFBWY on that one!

Melinda, as always your comments are outstanding!

He and his pitiful little band against the entire Death Star garrison and he thinks they're going to get out alive?

Exactly! And they go against the Empire at Hoth, he goes to rescue Han and Leia on Bespin, they attack DS2... All with that same attitude!

so in his eyes he was worth risking his life for.

Another damn-fool idealistic crusade! And part of what makes Luke so heroic. Unlike his father, he's a real Jedi.
