I Happen to Like Nice Men

In reading around the internet, I've come across a few references to Anakin and Padme's romance as being a little creepy.

I'm not sure I'd use "creepy" as the right word, but it was definitely "off".

I can't for the life of me figure out what she saw in him. Sure, he was cute in a beach-boy sort of way, Michelle68 can appreciate that, and flirtatious and she probably liked the attention he paid to her. She was smart enough to see that he was hot for her.

But in many other ways she was not so smart. He was younger than her, and way more immature, in spite of being a Jedi he was petty and jealous, not to mention selfish.

And after his temper tantrum in the garage on Tatooine, and the admission that he'd killed all the Tuskens, the thought of "run, Padme, run" as Master Mina would say comes to mind.

I know some girls like bad boys, but "I happen to like nice men".

I suppose she might have felt motherly towards him. Now that is creepy. And he seems to like her attentions, since he has to run to her and be placated whenever he's upset, which seems to be all the time in ROTS.

George, I love you dearly, but you took the greatest villain of all time, or as Ewan says "everyone's favorite baddie" and turned him into a wimp.

I guess you wanted us to feel sorry for him, but you over did it! I would much have preferred a grown up, mature, heroic man. It would have made his fall all that much more tragic.

Instead I wanted to slap him and tell him to act like a Jedi, or at least like a man.

But then, I happen to like nice men!

I must say that I never saw it that way. I agree that the Padme's initial attraction to Anakin is a little unclear, but I suppose that he was unlike anyone she'd met before. The tormented soul part was maybe part of it too, she wanted to help him.
I never saw Anakin as wimpy or immature, I saw him as conflicted and tormented. Perhaps, he is a little immature in Clones but I thought he was pretty grown up in ROTS - trying very hard to be a good Jedi. For example, he didn't want to kill Dooku because it wasn't the way of the Jedi.

Ain't that the truth! :D He was quite a disappointment.

How about "iffy"? That sounds like a good compromise. ;)

The fact that she married him says something about her maturity, too, doesn't it?

By the Force, when I first saw "Leia's Mother's" comments, I thought she was Master Mina and freaked out. Or that Master Mina had freaked out. :^O

Well, earlier you think she's smarter than that!

Brains and maturity are two separate things. Luckily, I have both. :p

I think it is not so rare that Padmé f alls in love with him, IMO. First of all, Padmé did't have a lot of social life where she could meet people of her age, she was too busy for that, being first a queen and later a senator. Secondly, he was a handsome, overgifted boy, a galactic hero. She had known him as a boy, so she never expected him to be too mature. And, remember, he was completely selflessness, deeply caring about all he loved. She could not know that his immaturity, together with a wrong interpretation of this love for the others, would lead him, with Palpy's inotorious cooperation, to become what he did.

Only because of himself! "I won't lose you the way I lost my mother" and "I can't live without her" testify to that. And he wasn't a galactic hero when she married him.

You'd think she'd have married a politician....ewww....

Ain't that the truth! :D He was quite a disappointment.

Yes, I'd envisioned someone a little older, a little more heroic as I and others have often said. Maybe someone who'd suffered by some war trauma. He was OK, I just think the character could have been better.

I mean before this. He offered himself to run the podrace for Qui-gon and Padme in Ep I, he saved Obi-Wan from the buzz droids and afterwards when he was unconscious, he tried to save even the clone pilots .... of course he tried to save his mother .... Perhaps he was selfish because he could not live without his beloved ones, but for instance he did not love the clone pilots .... Shmi says so to Qui-Gon, she says that he gives without expectiing any reward ... I think that if Palpy had not twisted his mind or Qui-Gon had lived, he would not have probably become Darth Vader...

This whole labeling of Anakin as a "bad boy" type to be avoided at all costs seems ridiculous to me.

If you're attracted to Bad Boys, then I see where there's a potential. But I like real men. I wanted to see Anakin Skywalker as a hero, not a pathetic loser, and that's how he comes across to me.

I get the feeling that you have some one-dimensional view of Anakin . . .

You are correct, I don't like him, he was the biggest disappointment of the PT for me.

Oh yes, I blame Palpy for his manipulation! I just think it would have been more tragic if he'd been a strong man instead of a whiner.

Well, Luke was an immature whiner too. Both of their personalities were similar. I find Anakin's immaturity appropriate as a mirror to Luke's. The difference is that Luke chose good and "grew up" but Anakin didn't, thus leading him to the Dark Side.

Except Luke was an inexpeirenced, unhappy farmboy, whereas Anakin was a Jedi Knight. He should have been more mature. I blame George, LOL

That's an understatement...I've been using that line a lot lately. :^O

Anakin was a big disappointment. As you've stated, the fall would have been much more tragic and captivating if GL had made Anakin grown up, mature and heroic. I think that is why GL is doing the Clone Wars, so we get more of a character build up of Anakin.

By the Force, when I first saw "Leia's Mother's" comments, I thought she was Master Mina and freaked out. Or that Master Mina had freaked out.

Oh God, oh God I think I'm going to die...This alone is enough to make me change my Avatar. :^O

I can't for the life of me figure out what she saw in him.... he's good in bed. :^O

She was smart enough to see that he was hot for her....in bed. :^O

But then, I happen to like nice men!...in bed. :^O

Well, Luke was an immature whiner too.... He may be a whiner and immature, but he sure gives GREAT hugs and smells real good...in bed...(just kidding on the bed part, but don't think I can't dream)..:^O

Doesn't the sentences just roll off the tongue when you add to the phrase..."in bed" at the end?!?!?!...LMAO :^O

There that's better...nice pretty new Avatar...LMAO

Among others, wouldn't be the first time I followed you somewhere.

I'm liking him a little more in Clone Wars, he's a little bit more manly!

No only is he manly in the Clone Wars, but he is actually mature and wise in his teachings. Kind of reminds me of another Skywalker....

Oh Oh Oh Oh...what a great title for a possible future blog: Another Skywalker or There is Another. :^O
