BLOGACALYPSE NOW

Well, my last goodbye blog was so well received; I thought I'd go another round...

Over the last thirty-three years I've quoted Star Wars many, many times, and I'm thinking now about how the words of The Saga affect us, and stay with us.

So here are some favorite passages, as usual they are not in any particular order...

1. For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times, before the Empire. (Obi-Wan Kenobi, ANH)

These are words that hooked me on Jedi for life. What wonderful beings they must be! I was intrigued by the idea... and even more by this:

2. The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, it binds the galaxy together.

Wow. The Force. I love it. Here at last was the answer to life. And the Jedi get to use it to their advantage? Cool. So not only are the Jedi brave and dedicated, they have special powers! Like levitating things and talking their way out of trouble with simple minded stormtroopers.

3. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter! (Yoda, TESB)

Now this was really cool. We are more than our bodies, more than our visible selves.

4. Do! Or do not! There is no try.

This one I'm not so sure about. Being an underachiever, I never much believed in "Do it or die trying." However, it is a memorable quote, as my dentist reminded me a few years ago.

5. I am a Jedi, like my father before me. (Luke Skywalker, ROTJ)

Well, Luke's father is a bit of a loser, but I can appreciate the sentiment. And Luke was just so damn cool and collected when he said that, it was hot... I mean... er... it was wonderful!

6. Laugh it up, Fuzzball! (Han Solo, TESB)

In one sentence, you get to see not only Han's affection for Chewie, but it's confirmed that he's got a thing for Leia.

7. Were you and Satine ever...
I don't see what possible bearing that has on the current situation!
(Anakin and Obi-Wan, TCW "Voyage of Temptation")

So here we have Anakin asking Obi-Wan if he was romantically and intimately involved with Duchess Satine. And Obi-Wan's answer says it all. Yes, he was. And it was something wonderful and deeply felt, and thus he doesn't want to discuss it. Also, it was artfully written so that adults got it, but it went over the heads of younglings.

8. I used to bull's-eye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters."

Stang! I don't want to run into any womp rats in any dark alleys... but, as Charlie Ross says, "Why are we using the metric system?"

9. He must follow his own path; no one can choose it for him. (Princess Leia, ANH)

Words to live by. Too bad a lot of people in this galaxy don't heed them!

10. It's a nine-part story... (Paraphrasing George Lucas, 1978)

Come on, George... tell us what happens next!

OK, those are some of my favorites, how about the rest of you? Tell us what and why!
:)

I love the line "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter." In the novelization of RETURN OF THE JEDI Anakin says this to Luke when he removes his mask. I wish that had gotten into the actual film, because it would have communicated so much: Anakin's hope that Luke could still love him beyond his scars, and the knowledge that Anakin had once known Yoda (apart from that statement, there's nothing I remember in the films or the books that Anakin had anything to do with Yoda; as Obi-Wan says he thought he could train Anakin as well as Yoda).

I forget...when are they supposed to pull the plug on us here on the blogs?

Yep - I agree with FAN4YRS, 'Luminous beings are we.." is one of my all time faves. Everyone can enjoy it - religious types who need some spiritual reassurance, and the rest of us who like the idea that we are all made of stars.
#4 makes me laugh - do or do not? I thought only the Sith deal in absolutes...

My own favorite?

"I'm going closer to one of the big ones."
"Closer?"
Closer?!"
"RRAWWAARRGGHHH!!!!????"

My favorite is "I hope so, commander, for your sake, the Emperor is not as forgiving as I am." I mean, the one guy in the universe that Vader answers to has to be REALLY bad, and that sentence sort of gives you an idea of how bad the the Emperor is, I've blogged about it before.

OK, so how about this. I am SOoL with my Hyperspace membership. It was set to autorenew on January 6, but alas...no more autorenewals or new memberships. :(

I suppose this was announced somewhere in that long email we got months and months ago, but I know I didn't realize it.

If you go to the Hyperspace page, it writes of Hyperspace in the past tense, 2004-2011.

RIP, Hyperspace. My life would be entirely different without you.

Excellent quotes all! And I absolutely want to jump on the "luminous beings are we. Not this crude matter" bandwagon. Beautiful. Inspirational. AND spiritually profound. Not bad for a muppet.

"You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you." - Obi-Wan, ROTS
This was one of the saddest moments in the saga for me. Obi Wan was expressing his love for his fallen Jedi comrade. Ewan did such a fantastic job (I'm being totally objective, of course :D) of expressing the emotion that Obi-Wan was going through; his voice even broke with the pain he felt. :_|

Laugh it up, Fuzzball! (Han Solo, TESB) Love it!!!! But I love them all, really good choices.

There are so many Classic lines; one that sticks in my mind is from from the begining of ANH, "We're doomed" (C-3PO). And "I Love You", "I know" (TESB) so cool.

Do! Or do not! There is no try.
Great line that relly has a lot of meaning in everything that we do in this world.

Of course, who can forget lines that made us laugh like, "Slimy? Mudhole? My home this is!" - Yoda, ESB. And, "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?" - Leia, ANH. These are some great lines.

ahem...you got that all wrong...I think Yoda meant either do it or don't do it. There's no in between here, make a decision and go for it regardless of the consequences...or something like that...LOL

Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.

One of my favorites is my blog title:

Try not. Do. Or Do Not. There Is No Try.

I know there are a lot of people who take exception with this entire thought ... that it basically sets one up for failure. One either succeeds. Or one fails. There is no in between.

I disagree. It is the push - even the shove - to do what is necessary to attain one's goal. Sometimes that means putting forth a lot of sweat, and practice.

We all can't be good at everything. That isn't realistic. But oh what one can accomplish ... :)

Great post - many of my favorite quotes were mentioned, but... I feel one is lacking:

"Mesa caused mabbe one, two-y lettle bitty axadentes, huh? Yud-say boom da gassar, den crashin der boss's heylibber, Den banished".
