It's Not About Boba Fett!

Happy thirtieth to The Empire Strikes Back OR What do you mean "Episode 5?"

I know I'm not the only one who's getting a little tired of Boba Fett being shoved in our faces for the 30th Anniversary of TESB. From the CV logo to Tee Shirts, it's just too much.

The Empire Strikes Back is the favorite of the Saga for a lot of fans. Trying to make Boba Fett, who had but three lines, the focus of this film is to totally disrespect a magnificent movie.

I saw TESB originally in a theater, as it was meant to be seen... after three years of anticipation! And with a lot of "Episode 5? What do you mean 'Episode 5'?"

And I saw it several times, probably two-dozen times... and Boba Fett, whose name I didn't even know, was not an important part of it. He was just the scum of a bounty hunter who took Han away at the end.

TESB is about the Rebellion. Imagining the Rebels living on the run, hiding out on an ice planet, evacuating in a panic, not knowing who would make it out and who wouldn't.

It's about Luke and Yoda, and the training of a Jedi. Everything we learned about the Force, and the principals of the light side, the dedication of a Jedi Knight.

It's about Han and Leia and the development of a love affair. Who could forget Han's "I know" with its rich, multi-layered meaning.

It's about Lando and his betrayal of Han. It's about the Empire.

It's also about Luke and Vader. Was he really Luke's father? Or was he telling one big, fat cosmic lie? Ha, wait three years to find out!

The Empire Strikes Back is a great movie, one of the best ever made. It's about heroes and their adventures.

It's not about Boba Fett. So enough already!

How do you know that? ;)

The Empire Strikes Back is the favorite of the Saga for a lot of fans.

Understatement of the century! Not this fan, though. But you know me, I always have to be different.

Trying to make Boba Fett, who had but three lines, the focus of this film is to totally disrespect a magnificent movie.

And to disrespect the intelligence of the viewer and the fan, as well. And to disrespect the integrity of the franchise and its history.

And with a lot of "Episode 5? What do you mean 'Episode 5'?"

I bet that was a real shocker! I probably would've had a hernia right in the middle of the theater. Because I always sit in the middle of the theater. :p

And I saw it several times, probably two-dozen times...

Wow, and I was concerned about obsession because I saw Alice in Wonderland four times. I guess I shouldn't worry. :^O

and Boba Fett, whose name I didn't even know, was not an important part of it. He was just the scum of a bounty hunter who took Han away at the end.

This is an incredibly significant idea, and something I didn't even think about. What about those hardcore, die-hard, been-there-from-the-beginning-and-gonna-see-it-to-the-end fans who are always complaining about how they're messing up this characterization and that characterization? I saw ESB on a TV in a family room, with access to a computer that would be destined to reveal all manner of Star Wars backstory to its occupant.

You guys didn't. You saw it on the big screen, with zero knowledge of any of the new characters before you entered the theater, and very little knowledge afterwards. I'd be willing to bet that a good majority of the die-hards didn't even notice Boba Fett until much, much later. So why in the world aren't these older fans raising Hades?

These are the same fans who whine and moan about the Prequels and the EU and TCW and characterization and continuity, but when there's something that really matters, that really, deeply touches on what it means to be a Star Wars fan -- that the celebration of our passion is idolized by a piece of scum too ignoble even to be referred to as a villian -- they're obnoxiously complacent. Makes total sense to me...?

The Empire Strikes Back is a great movie, one of the best ever made. It's about heroes and their adventures.

One of the six best ever made. I betcha can't guess the other five.

I agree completely with you and the Captain (although I do love Fett).

I do like, though, how this ESB anniversary is returning Boba to his quieter, more mysterious roots. He used to be pretty cool!

How do you know that?

I've been paying attention... for once in my life...

And to disrespect the intelligence of the viewer and the fan, as well. And to disrespect the integrity of the franchise and its history.

Well said! Better than I could have said it!

I bet that was a real shocker!

Nowadays it would be a "WTF Moment"

I agree, Boba was such a small part of the movie, hardly even worth mentioning.

And yet he's mentioned over, and over, and over...

What's this blog about?...ROTFLMAO.

It's not important!

I do like, though, how this ESB anniversary is returning Boba to his quieter, more mysterious roots. He used to be pretty cool!

I like to imagine that after the last TCW episode he was hauled off to galactic reform school... now that's cool...

I certainly agree that Boba Fett's overrated, and I wish the Empire Strikes Back Anniversary would use a little more Yoda.

Still, maybe The Powers That Be are right that for the general populace, even if not for us die-hards, it's an image of Fett that most quickly calls to mind TESB. Tough to say.

It's also about Luke and Vader. Was he really Luke's father? Or was he telling one big, fat cosmic lie? Ha, wait three years to find out!

Oh, how I remember emerging from that movie theater all those years ago, walking beside my husband, and uttering, "Darth Vader? Luke's father? I don't believe it!"

"You do know that 'vater' means 'father' in German, don't you?" my hubby asked. It's a close 'neighbor' to vader . . . and we all know how GL likes to mesh the real with make believe, we discussed. . .

No, I was not aware of that, I informed him . . . but that wasn't surprising since that was one language I never learned.;)

We really tried to talk in hushed tones so we wouldn't give anything away to the fans waiting in line for the next viewing. I'm sure you can imagine how difficult that was considering what we just had seen - and heard! :8}

But Boba Fett? Boba Fett? Even in ROTJ, he didn't matter much to us. (sorry BF, and sorry Jeremy Bulloch)

It's always been about Luke, :x and it is t-shirts featuring Luke :x you'll see me wearing at CV. Yes, I know I'll purchase a Celebration t-shirt, and that t-shirt will feature - predominantly - BF. But my loyalty always will belong to the greatest Jedi of them all. :x

MTFBWY :)
