Back from the Edge of the World

It is the end of the world, but you can't see it from here.

* * *

Here on earth we have an expression, often applied to small towns, "It's not the end of the earth, but you can see it from here."

In Star Wars Galaxies, every world has an end, theoretically. And today I was at the edge of Dantooine, but I couldn't see it. I could see way beyond the edge, I could even see enemies there, and throw my lightsaber there, but I couldn't go there.

Then I started thinking about, "you can't go home again." I'm not sure why, but it struck me that home is a very furtive thing in Star Wars. When Luke goes home, he finds his aunt and uncle murdered by the Empire, and realizes he can never go home again.

Han doesn't really have a home, having been raised on freighters for most of his life.

Anakin goes home again and finds his mother dying.

Leia can NEVER go home again, since her whole planet was destroyed.

Obi-Wan and all the Jedi can never go home again after Order 66.

So what is home? Is it truly where the heart is? Or just the place where you hang your hat?

George Carlin said a house is just a place to keep your stuff, and in "Galaxies" it's certainly true. Although I have this habit of always going home before I log off for the night. I just don't like the idea of standing out in the desert or the woods all night long.

One time I logged off in the middle of Kachiro, logged in with my other character, and saw myself standing there. "Twins!" My guild mates said. "Creepy," I said.

I suppose I could live in a Cantina, but that just doesn't seem like home.

So next time I'm at the edge of a planet, I'll remember, I CAN go home. Or at least I should!

I think we can go home ... at least figuratively speaking in some cases. Home can be where good thoughts, good memories and a good heart reside.

If you care to read my shameless blug, I wrote on this topic a little while ago too.

I've thought about this as well... about how at many times in the movies, alot of the main characters are, in a way, homeless. It's just funny how in the SW universe, they mostly think in planetary terms, rather than in national or local terms, about their homes. In the OT, Luke, Leia and Han pretty much just have their bases (that they're always fleeing from) and ships (that are always getting shot at) to "live" on. While I'm sure the other Rebels have Empire-controlled worlds to return to, because of the cause they've joined, they're pretty much just going from place to place.

There's a moment in TESB when Leia is sitting in the dark on the Falcon, in the cockpit, right before the mynock scares her. She's just sitting there in the dark, very quiet and thinking about something. I have always imagined that she's sitting there and thinking about Alderaan, and how much has been lost and how far they still have to go to defeat the Empire. And thinking about where, when everything is said and done, where her next home will be!

Nice blog. :)

Here on earth we have an expression,

You make the assumption that all of us here are from Earth. :p

So what is home? Is it truly where the heart is? Or just the place where you hang your hat?

I think that home is where you feel like you're most...at home! ;)

It's a haven, a sancturary, a place where you feel safe and comfortable and loved. So, even though the Rebels may have no true location that they are able to call their home, as long as they're with their companions fighting for a cause that is just, that is home to them, and that is where they belong.

Your blogs really are improving, Giddy. ;

Oh yes, it's what keeps us from falling off the edge of the world!

I have always imagined that she's sitting there and thinking about Alderaan, and how much has been lost and how far they still have to go to defeat the Empire.

And probably wondering if they ever would. And thinking about that certain scoundrel, too. :)

You make the assumption that all of us here are from Earth.

Not at all! I was just on Earth while I was writing this. :^O

Your blogs really are improving, Giddy.

Aw, thanks,but they're pure fluff.

Home. Where The Heart Is.

But, then again, my "heart" basically resides in two places since I have family I love very much living in two different places halfway across the country from each other. Can I really be in two places at once?

Wow! I need a clone.

MTFBWY :)
