Often when I'm playing a Star Wars game, I think about heroes. In "Star Wars Galaxies" I never hesitated about siding with the Rebellion. It's that whole '"good vs. evil" thing.
But in real life? I'm such a coward, I wonder if I'd ever have the courage to join a rebellion, to take a risk like that and live my life on the run, as a wanted criminal. Sounds exciting? I don't think so!
I like living in a house with central heat and air, not a jungle temple or an ice cavern. Not to mention that I require satellite TV, a DVD player and high speed Internet.
The Rebel Alliance was made up of heroes. People who chose to dedicate themselves to fighting for what was right, for freedom.
Live free or die! It doesn't seem like that would wear well over time.
Luke Skywalker was a reluctant rebel. It's not that I like the Empire, I hate it! But there's nothing I can do about it! That would be me, burying my head in the sand of Tatooine.
But Luke was cut loose from his life on the farm, and pushed into heroics by his idealism and his unselfishness, he went on to become the galaxy's greatest hero.
Anakin would like to have been known by that title, but his arrogance and selfishness led to his downfall. Luke, on the other hand, is Anakin's opposite. His modesty turns into self-confidence, rather than over confidence, and he accepts his fate as it unfolds before him. Your destiny lies along a different path, Obi-Wan told him.
And what a path it was. And he followed it willingly.

*muttering* Ha! Just because Giddy's been playing one measly game of Galaxies for about a month she thinks she owns the whole kriffing universe. ;)
But, yes, already I agree with you. I really take my SW games to heart, actually pausing the game sometimes and thinking about what is the most selfess, brave, noble, shrewd, resourceful, and awesome thing to do. In other words, if I were a Jedi, what would I do?
I'm such a coward, I wonder if I'd ever have the courage to join a rebellion
I think you'd do just fine in a rebellion. :p
Sounds exciting?
It darn well does! Where's your Jedi's sense of adventure, Giddy? I try to make my life adventurous. I teeter constantly on the edge, but always manage to pull myself to the other side. I wouldn't live any other way.
TV, a DVD player and high speed Internet.
Don't forget an oven, a microwave, a refrigerator, a freezer (for ice cream), a stove, an Xbox 360, a suped-up but sleek little PC with a 22 inch screen, and an R2 unit to follow you around. :^O
People who chose to dedicate themselves to fighting for what was right, for freedom.
Whenever you ever have a doubt that the idealogy and purpose of the Empire might be justified, you go ask the people of Alderaan what they think about it. The Rebels were fighting against tyranny and oppression. There's nothing more noble than that.
Luke, on the other hand, is Anakin's opposite.
Both start out young and idealistic, and both possess scars from their path that they must learn to contend with. Anakin fights, but eventually chooses the quick and easy path. Luke learns from Anakin's mistake and chooses the path of the Jedi.
He even manages to redeem Anakin's evil incarnation, Vader, although Vader, himself believes that he can never return to the light. It was the compassion of the Jedi that proved him wrong.
And what a path it was. And he followed it willingly.
And he still walks that path, at least, until Fate of the Jedi comes out in 70 days, 21 hours, 29 minutes, and 26 seconds. Then, we'll just have to see. :^O
Sorry I rambled on so, but when it's 2:30 in the morning and you're only half-awake (or am I half-asleep?) the thoughts just don't stop coming. :_|

Gl, I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get over here to read your essay. I've been under a self-imposed moratorium (have you seen all the comments I've left on d_h's and ami's blogs of last week??? Yikes! :O), but today I decided to lift said restriction. I could not stay away any longer.
And it's a "cold day" up here on Hoth. No school. We're made of heartier souls than this, but I figure if my child was younger, had to wait on a corner for the bus while wicked winds pummelled her, I would have wanted school cancelled for the day. (My padawan gets "chauffered" to school.) Thus, I have some extra time on my hands. :D
Do you really think you'd bury your head in the sand if the Rebellion needed you??? I find it invigorating to see how people - especially people who never thought they had it in them ; - will rise to the occasion when they are needed. Never underestimate the power of the human spirit. :D I think you would have risen to the challenge. :D How can I be so bold as to make that statement? Well, I'm a bold person ; :^O . . . and it is just something that comes across in your writing. How can anyone who likes the likes of Obi-wan, Luke :x and, in the world of make-believe in SWG, chooses the light side. That all speaks volumes, and shows me, at least, that you have what it takes to rise to the challenge. :)
I like living in a house with central heat and air
:^O
Okay, I shouldn't laugh, but statements like this always make me think of my oldest padawan, in particular, who seems so disconnected if she doesnt' have her cell phone w/in easy reach. :^O
You know I can't resist a blog that mentions Luke. :x
(darn that dinger! I'll be right back. I have to go take care of padawan # 2's lunch . . .)
(cont. . .)
And he still walks that path
True, true, true, VS, but did you know that Luke :x actually turns to the dark side in a novel long before Fate of the Jedi? Leia manages to pull him back, and the galaxy is all the better for it. :) I don't know what Fate has in store for us, but I, for one, am approaching the novel w/ a bit of trepidation. I most definitely will read it. I just don't know if I'm going to like what I read . . .
the thoughts just don't stop coming
And that's a bad thing? ?:|

Not any more! ; :D

I'd say they're pretty darn interesting as is, GL!!! :D
I see I'm back in my usual form. I won't go as far as to say I'm monopolizing the comment boxes here (VS is doing her [come to think of it, I may be assuming something here that is not true] fair share, I'm happy to see :)). Sorry to take up so many spots, GL. When I get going, I keep right on rolling. At least until I'm forced to stop . . . ;
Excellent musings! :D

Well, I thought it was interesting...
actually turns to the dark side in a novel long before Fate of the Jedi?
Sure, but the insight gained from that experience served him well in the even more trying events which occurred after this.
I just don't know if I'm going to like what I read . . .
I hear you. This series is supposed to end the events of the Legacy era, and the relative youth of Luke's Force ghost in the Legacy comics kind of worries me.
And that's a bad thing?
At 2:30 in the morning...yes. :p
